Go Big Or Go Home: Raft Costa Rica

Whoever said “go big or go home” must have been to Costa Rica.

For everyone who reads our Costa Rica Travel Blog, you already know that rafting is a great passion of ours. Ricky worked for many years as a rafting guide and safety kayaker on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica and he could not have been happier doing so. He always joked that the stunning backdrop of Costa Rican jungle meets adrenaline-inducing river rapids was his “office”, and that he fully embodied his “job” of making rafting tours an experience visitors would never forget.

I have written previously about the Pacuare River Family as well as the Pacuare River Rafting Tour, but today’s rafting indulgence is simply to entertain you with some of our favourite river photos and perhaps tempt you to travel to Costa Rica and come to know the thrill yourself.

Arguably one of the most incredible photos we have is the one shown above displaying Ricky and his entire raft of six tourists. Can’t see the raft? Don’t adjust your computer screen – it is hidden among the roaring rapid that is “Cimarrones” – a reminder why class IV rivers are worth the added cost, drive, fear, or whatever else is required of you in order to work a Pacuare River rafting experience into your vacation plans.

Thinking that the Pacuare River may be too daring for you? Think again! Although some of the photos included in this post may suggest otherwise, Pacuare can be quite tame at many times of the year. The river is typically at its lowest during the months of January to May, in correspondence with Costa Rica’s dry/summer season. In contrast, the river tends to be at its highest in October and November when rainfall throughout the country is plentiful. This being said, Pacuare is safe to run year-round (daily safety measures are in effect – a river tour will be cancelled if the water level is too high and dangerous to run), and prior rafting experience (and believe it or not, the ability to swim) is not required. The tour offers all of the safety equipment you will need, safety instructions and demonstrations, and a confirmation of rescue techniques (performed by the rafting guides and safety kayakers) should the need for these ever arise. However, these are simply precautionary, and neither a detailed knowledge of rescue or swimming techniques are asked of travellers.

Travelling as a family? Children as young as 12 are able to do the tour (younger children may be accepted, depending on the time of year you will be travelling and the river level at that time) and there is no upper age limit (all aboard, those of you who are young at heart!).

As a side project (and only because we love this topic so much), Pura Vida! eh? Incorporated is in the process of building an online rafting community entitled Raft Costa Rica. The purpose of the new site is to create a place where rafters from numerous rivers in Costa Rica (Pacuare, Reventazon, Toro, Sarapiqui, Balsa, Colorado, Pejibaje, Naranjo, Savegre, Tenorio, and Chirripo – to name a few) can connect and share photos, river stories, and advice with other members of the Costa Rican rafting community.

Raft Costa Rica will also act as a resource for travellers who are looking for information about rafting tour options in Costa Rica. The site will provide specific tour and river outfitter information, as well as provide rafting photos of the rivers, scenery, and rapids, to help travellers choose the river tour that best suits their interests and needs.
