You asked, we answered! As a follow-up to our post Which Costa Rica Zipline Is The Best? Comparing 6 Popular Canopy Tours in Arenal and Monteverde, we are delving into some of Costa Rica’s most popular hanging bridge tour sites. Many of these sites are located in the Arenal and Monteverde areas of the country, so we will focus our attention on tours run to/from these two destinations.

Specifically, we have chosen four of the most popular tour experiences available in the Arenal and Monteverde areas (including those provided by Sky Adventures Arenal, the Arenal Hanging Bridges, Sky Adventures Monteverde, and Selvatura) so that we could note some similarities and differences between each according to a number of important factors (such as the number of bridges offered, the minimum age limit to participate in the tour, whether or not transportation is included, whether or not the hanging bridges experience is guided or self-guided, and extra features available such as lookout points, waterfalls, and more).

Here comes the disclaimer! As we mentioned in our related canopy tour post, unfortunately it is not possible for us to identify one of the following options as ‘the best hanging bridges site’. Throughout our experience working with clients from all over the world, we understand that each traveller (and the experience he/she is looking to have) is different. For this reason, we could not attempt to determine what is best for travellers – instead we aim to provide the facts so travellers can quickly and easily decide for themselves which option is best according to their individual desires, needs, and evaluation.

  2. Thank you so much for this blog! It’s helping me immensely to plan our trip.

Couple of questions: Can you walk any of these hanging bridges (or any others in the area) for free? We don’t need a guide. I just want to see and photograph wildlife. Along those lines, which hanging bridge or area has the most wildlife to photograph?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    • Qikese –
Thank you so much for the kind compliment! We are glad to hear that you find the site helpful. 🙂
For the hanging bridges, all of those that we list above charge an entrance fee so unfortunately none are free. This being said, if you opt not to visit with a guide you can just as easily visit on your own by paying the entrance fee and walking through the bridges by yourself. The following are the current (January 2014) entrance fees for the four hanging bridge sites listed above:

      Sky Adventures Arenal: $24/adult
*transportation is not included – it can be added on for an additional $14 per person to/from La Fortuna hotels if required (additional fees apply for non-La Fortuna hotels)

      Arenal Hanging Bridges: $24/adult
*transportation is not included – it can be added on for an additional $14 per person to/from La Fortuna hotels if required (additional fees apply for non-La Fortuna hotels)

      Sky Adventures Monteverde: $23/adult
*transportation is not included – it can be added on for an additional $4 or $6.50 per person to/from Monteverde hotels (exact cost depends on the hotel’s location)

      Selvatura: $30/adult
      *transportation is included

In regards to wildlife, this entirely depends on the time of day and year that you plan to visit, however we have had the best spotting luck at Sky Adventures’ Monteverde hanging bridges.

For guided tours (if you are open to these), we highly recommend them. You may be interested in reading our related post Guided Tours In Costa Rica: Are They Necessary, Valuable, And/Or Worthwhile? to learn when and where guides can make a world of difference.

  4. I am sure this post has touched all the internet viewers, its really really fastidious piece of writing
    on building up new weblog.

  5. We did Selvatura and have nothing but great things to say! I’ll be writing about it very soon actually to share the details, but we had a blast! 🙂

  6. Thank you for following my blog. I appreciate it.

I looked over this blog and noticed that a bridge looked familiar to me. I went on a cruise to the Panama Canal last year and we did take a trip through the rain forest and crossed a bridge similar to the one you posted. It wasn’t as high though. Heights are scary to me. I enjoyed the trip immensely though.

  7. Thank you for stopping by my blog and becoming a new follower. I have never visited Costa Rica but your pictures certainly make me want to add it to my travel list.

  8. wild bridges, would really enjoy walking these 🙂 thanks

  9. HI, thanks for following my blog, which brought me here. You have a wonderfully informative and inspiring collection of posts here – love the photos of the hanging bridges! Cheers!

  10. We were in CR in 2012 and went to the Dante suspension bridge at Arenal. What an experience that was in what can only be described as paradise on earth. I’ve decided to commit a page on my blog to our trip because of the impact CR had on us. Thanks for helping others find their path there! Pura Vida!

  11. These pictures make me want to go back SO BAD! I loved the early morning bird watching tour on the Arenal hanging bridges.

The photos are calling your name. You will make it back one day I am sure – Costa Rica is TOO beautiful to not return. 😉 Wishing you happy days in Seattle!

  12. I was on a hanging bridge in Guanacaste Province a few years ago. It was NOTHING like the ones you’re picturing here! Yikes! Beautiful!
