Naming Arenal and Monteverde hotels is more difficult task than you might think!

When it comes to choosing a Costa Rica hotel for your vacation, you’ve done the research. You know (more or less) where the property is located, what the room price is, and which amenities are provided, but can you correctly quote the hotel’s name?

Among travelers who visit La Fortuna (Arenal) and/or Monteverde, comments like these are common:

  • “I am staying at the Monteverde hotel…”
  • “I can’t remember the name fully, but it has Arenal in the title…”
  • “It’s Monteverde something, I’m sure…”
  • “My hotel is named after the Arenal Volcano…”

Unfortunately, these exclamations don’t help anyone because La Fortuna and Monteverde, among a few other destinations in Costa Rica, are notorious for having accommodations with similar-sounding names. Here’s proof:

Ambiguous Monteverde accommodation names

  • Cabinas Monteverde Paraiso
  • Casa Jungle Monteverde
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Family House
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge
  • Monteverde Country Lodge
  • Monteverde EcoLodge
  • Monteverde Inn
  • Monteverde Lodge
  • Monteverde Luxury Hotel
  • Monteverde Moon Forest
  • Monteverde Rustic Lodge
  • Monteverde Villa Lodge
  • Montana Monteverde
  • Jardines de Monteverde
  • Selina Monteverde
  • Senda Monteverde

Ambiguous Arenal (La Fortuna) accommodation names

  • Amor Arenal
  • Arenal Backpackers
  • Arenal Country Inn
  • Arenal Green
  • Arenal Jireh
  • Arenal Kioro
  • Arenal Lodge
  • Arenal Manoa
  • Arenal Observatory Lodge
  • Arenal Paraiso
  • Arenal Poshpacker
  • Arenal Rabfer
  • Arenal Roca Lodge
  • Arenal Rooms
  • Arenal Rossi
  • Arenal Springs Resort & Spa
  • Arenal Tifakara
  • Arenal Vista Lodge
  • Arenal Volcano Inn
  • Arenal Volcano Lodge
  • Aunty Arenal Lodge
  • Brisas Arenal
  • Colores del Arenal
  • Destinos Arenal
  • Gran Arenal
  • La Pradera del Arenal
  • Lavas del Arenal
  • Palacios Arenal
  • Vista Arenal

Watch out for words that are shared across hotels

“Arenal,” “Springs,” “Resort,” and/or “Spa”

Even more confusing can be the sharing of words across hotels. Consider these two properties in Arenal (La Fortuna):

  • The Springs Resort & Spa
  • The Arenal Springs Resort & Spa

These two hotels are completely different despite similarities in their names. The former is a superior-quality hotel with rooms that range between $175.00 and $275.00 per night. This latter is a resort with rooms that can cost several thousand dollars per night. In this example, not even citing the words “springs,” “resort,” and “spa” is enough to identify the accommodation.

“Arenal,” “Volcano,” and/or “Lodge”

In addition to “Arenal,” the words “volcano” and “lodge” are key. The following hotels are often mistaken for one another:

  • Aunty Arenal Lodge
  • Arenal Lodge
  • Arenal Observatory Lodge
  • Arenal Vista Lodge
  • Arenal Volcano Lodge
  • Volcano Lodge

“Monteverde” and “Lodge”

Monteverde, too, has its fair share of similar-sounding accommodations. The words “Monteverde” and “lodge” should be given special consideration when describing where you’ll stay in Monteverde. The following hotels are often mistaken for one another:

  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge
  • Monteverde Country Lodge
  • Monteverde EcoLodge
  • Monteverde Lodge
  • Monteverde Rustic Lodge
  • Monteverde Villa  Lodge

How to avoid disaster

Forgetting the name of your accommodation and traveling from hotel to hotel in search of your name on a check-in list is a real bummer. But, avoiding this kind of travel disaster is easy: simply keep a written record of the exact name(s) of your Costa Rica accommodations(s) handy throughout your trip.
