August 15th marks a very special day in Costa Rica: Día de la Madre (“Mother’s Day”). Like other Mother’s Day celebrations recognized around the world (typically in May), Costa Rica’s Día de la Madre is a day to take time out of your busy schedule to think of (or remember) your mom and how much joy she has brought to your life.

Do you have (or have you had) the pleasure of being raised by one of the world’s top moms? Ricky and I have, and we’re thankful for that blessing every day.

Not only are our moms strong and beautiful leaders, they’re also compassionate givers, gentle helpers, willing listeners, and kind souls.

As children, we don’t get a say in who our parents are. But Ricky and I consider ourselves to be two of the luckiest people in the world. We ended up with two moms who love us beyond words. They make it easy for us to become respectable adults by learning from their lessons and modeling their behavior.

On a more trivial note, our moms have got it going on.

My mom is an independent and generous woman who is always happy to help others and has explored almost as much of Costa Rica as Ricky and I have. She’s braved river crossings in rental cars, volcano eruptions, adventure tours, new foods, rainforest and cloud forest exploration, boat and ferry trips, traffic tickets, torrential rainstorms, and some encounters with wildlife that were too close for comfort.

Ricky’s mom is a hardworking, humble, and hands-on woman who is also a fantastic chef. She keeps Costa Rican tradition alive and well in our family by hosting gatherings for family and friends, playing party games, and whipping up communal meals. She’s a master at making gallo pinto, tamales, sweet bread with chiverre, tortillas, and more, and we feel honored that she’s passed so many recipes and cooking tips on to us.

Though our moms come from different worlds, when they’re together, we’re convinced that friendship is stronger than cultural differences, geographic distance, and language barriers.

They’re eerily similar, too, which is surprising but comforting. Both are quiet and soft-spoken. Both also have an intrinsic, exemplary drive and the ability (and willingness) to love unconditionally.

To all Costa Rican mamás (“moms”) like Ricky’s; moms who are Tica (“Costa Rican”) at heart like my own; and our sisters, aunts, and cousins who are raising smart and beautiful kids, thank you for being you. We hope it’s said often that you’re appreciated. To our own moms, we admire you and we love you. This special day, and this brief mention of what today means to us, is for you. ❤️
