IMPORTANT: This article is part of our Memorable Costa Rica series.

The revered Latin American female writer Isabel Allende once advised: “Write what should not be forgotten.” Inspired by the quote’s brevity and the subject matter of lasting significance, the articles in our Memorable Costa Rica series are concise and highlight what we feel are the most memorable aspects of featured Costa Rica experiences. If you don’t want to waste time rereading the repeated facts and long-drawn-out paraphrased summaries that some other Costa Rica resources offer, then the personal briefs in our Memorable Costa Rica series are perfect for you. Use them to discover the unique qualities and unforgettable moments that we believe each Costa Rica experience provides, so you can easily decide which experiences are worth incorporating into your trip, and in only five minutes or less. 👍🏽

Rio Negro Hot Springs brief

Down the road from a geothermal plant and sunken into the foothills of the expulsive Rincon de la Vieja Volcano are the Rio Negro Hot Springs—a collection of hot spring pools positioned at the edge of a swift-flowing river that bisects a lovely jungle setting. You won’t find pristine development or a big, flashy entrance here, just some roadside parking spots, a set of changing rooms, a trail that descends into the forest, and a hanging bridge that delivers you to the hot springs. The modest, secluded-feeling springs are a prime place to escape the glaring tourism that shines on the Guanacaste region as brightly as its beating sun. But they don’t always provide solitude. Despite being off the beaten path, the hot springs are moderately popular and receive a steady flow of small groups, giving the spot a chill but social vibe. Fortunately, capacity limits keep the place from feeling crowded. Expect to share the attraction’s small pools (and access to the property’s “mud bath“—a basin with mineral-rich volcanic clay that you can apply all over your skin for full-body rejuvenation) with a few other guests.
