The best ziplines in Costa Rica: Narrowing down the choices

One of Costa Rica’s best qualities is its variety of adventures. You can experience active volcanoes, explore the rainforest, lounge on beautiful beaches, hike through national parks and cloud forests, soak in hot springs, and even experience the best ziplines in Costa Rica with only a short amount of time to spend in this tiny country. However, with variety comes choice, and choice can be a difficult thing, especially when each adventure is worth having.

Travelers like you often turn to us for assistance with their Costa Rica trip planning and there’s no activity we’re asked about more than ziplining. Ziplining (or “canopy tours”; see our related blog post Ziplining And Canopy Tours In Costa Rica: The Difference Between The Two for definitions of each) is one of Costa Rica’s most popular adventures. It can be experienced in just about every area of the country, but the best ziplines in Costa Rica are located in Arenal and Monteverde. The lush, green, natural settings that these two destinations provide make for magnificent canopy tour backdrops. Both Arenal and Monteverde are home to several zipline tour providers; in the true spirit of competition, each company argues its zipline tour is the best in Costa Rica.

Sorting through the various options, especially if you’re in search of the best Arenal canopy tour or the best Monteverde canopy tour, can be time consuming. But, we can help. Here’s what you should know about the top six zipline tour options located in the Arenal and Monteverde areas of Costa Rica:

  • The Sky Trek Canopy Tour run at the Arenal Sky Adventures Park
  • The Big AMA Canopy Tour run at the Arenal Mundo Aventura Ecological Park
  • The Sky Trek Canopy Tour run at the Monteverde Sky Adventures Park
  • The Canopy Tour run at the Selvatura Park
  • The Canopy Tour run at the Monteverde Extremo Park
  • The Canopy Tour run at the 100% Aventura Adventure Park

My son (8) may be afraid to go on a zip line by himself, but I would be able to convince him to go with me. Would I be able to ride double with him on any of the zip line tours?

      Hey Cooper!

Great question! Some zip-line operators will not allow children to run cables with a parent for liability purposes, but most will allow children (who meet their minimum age limit to participate in the tour) to run cables with one of the canopy tour guides if need be. I’d recommend going with either Sky Adventures‘s “Sky Trek Canopy Tour” run in the La Fortuna/Arenal area or Sky Adventures‘s “Sky Trek Canopy Tour” run in the Monteverde area. Both of these tours use an automatic braking system that is easier for children to operate when they opt to run a cable on their own. We are going to be staying in the Jaco area in April – I was wondering which of these is closest? We’re still not sure if we’ll have a rental car or not so distance will be a factor for us.

    Thanks so much!!

      Hi Erin!

Across the two destinations covered in our article above (Monteverde and La Fortuna/Arenal), Monteverde would be the closest; however, it’s still a multi-hour drive from the Jaco region. To avoid traveling to and from Monteverde or La Fortuna/Arenal, especially since you mentioned that you may not have a rental car, I would recommend participating in a ziplining tour that takes place closer to Jaco, such as a canopy tour run at the Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park. Alternatively, you can head down the coast to the Manuel Antonio area where you’ll find two other great ziplining opportunities at MidWorld Costa Rica and Titi Canopy. Though the tours in Manuel Antonio are over an hour’s drive from Jaco, they’re closer than the tours in La Fortuna/Arenal and Monteverde described above.

I am staying in La Fortuna area, arenal mundo looks great, but is it worth the drive to selvatua? I do have a rental car, but will be there in early July. It says the drive will be 2 hours plus, is it worth the drive for the longer lines, or should we stick with what is close?

      Hello Jen!

In this case, we would recommend staying in La Fortuna/Arenal and zip-lining at an adventure park located in/around town. Selvatura is an approximate 3-hour drive from downtown La Fortuna, and since several of the zip-line tours that are provided in La Fortuna/Arenal are great, we wouldn’t recommend driving all the way to and from Monteverde just to experience one of the ziplines there. If you do decide to make the trip to Monteverde from La Fortuna/Arenal in one day, though, don’t miss the related info we provide in our blog post How To Make A Day Trip To Monteverde From La Fortuna / Arenal (Or Vice Versa).

Any thoughts on what is the best from San Jose? We have heard that Arenal has the best ziplines but it is several hours away. What is your recommendation? We are going for our honeymoon and we both love hiking and ziplining and like the adventure.

      Hi Kevin!

Great question! The La Fortuna/Arenal area, as well as the Monteverde area, provides excellent zip-lining experiences, but other zip-line tours do run to and from San Jose. Most still require a long drive out of the capital city anyway, but the drive would be shorter than the drive to either La Fortuna/Arenal or Monteverde. Will you be spending your entire honeymoon in San Jose? If so, we can provide you with information about canopy tours that are the closest to the city. Both the La Fortuna/Arenal and Monteverde areas are worth visiting, though; they provide much more than ziplines, so if you’re open to visiting one or both destinations during your honeymoon, I’d recommend doing so and choosing to participate in one of the zip-line tours described in our article above. We only did the zip-line at Monte Verde but it was great. The operators were very good and helpful for those that needed encouragement, we didn’t and had a blast on the zip-line and at the park

      Hello Jim!

Awesome! We’re glad to hear that the tour operators you experienced were kind and encouraging. May we ask, which Monteverde park or zip-line tour did you try?

      Pura vida! 🙂

We only did the zip-line at Monte Verde and it was great as was the park in general. I highly recommend the Monte Verde zip-line!

Hello! I just found your site and am loving it! Can you comment on the difference between automatic and hand-braking systems? Thanks!

      Hey Mel!

Absolutely! Two braking systems are used in Costa Rica. The most common braking system, which is used by the majority of canopy tour operators in Costa Rica, is a hand-braking system that requires zipliners to wear a thick (usually leather) glove during the tour and reduce their speed by applying pressure to the zip-line cable. Sky Adventures, a tour operator that runs canopy tours in the La Fortuna/Arenal and Monteverde areas, uses a system that requires zipliners to reduce their speed by jostling a set of handlebars from side to side.

      Pura vida! 🙂
