Could you provide a vague comparison of the van-boat-van method, as opposed to regular public transportation around the lake, in terms of cost and time?

      Hello Tim!

We always recommend booking in advance (this goes for everything you plan to use for your trip—accommodations, tours/activities, and transportation services, including the van-boat-van service), even if you’re a group of only two people. When do you intend to visit? If you don’t want to book the service in advance, you should be able to obtain seats without an issue during the low season; availability is harder to come by during the high season.

    Hello,
I am wondering if you could please list companies that provide the van -boat-van service. We will not have a car on this trip and will be traveling from LaFortuna to Santa Alena. Thank you for your help. Terri

      Hi Terri!

Several companies operate the van-boat-van trip across Arenal Lake. A few of the more popular companies to do so from La Fortuna are Desafio Adventure Company, Ride Costa Rica, and Aventuras Arenal.

Wondering what your thoughts are on the taxi/boat/horseback/taxi option I’ve seen – we like the idea of including the horseback portion of the trip but would love to know what you think of that?

      Hey Jacqueline!

The horseback option is a nice way to break up the trip. Personally, we prefer to take the van-boat-van direct, then go horseback riding in either Monteverde or La Fortuna, but the option to experience the horseback riding activity en route is a great way to travel efficiently if your time in La Fortuna and Monteverde will be tight. 😊

Thanks for the great article. I’m interested in traveling from Monteverde to La Fortuna via the mountain biking tour you mentioned. Can you provide a link to the tour provider, or some additional details so I can look into this option? Thanks again!!

      Hey Tara!

The tour operator has removed the mountain biking tour option from their list of available activities this year, so unfortunately the link I would normally send you is no longer active. 🙁 I’ll update the post above to address this change.

Hi, I am planning my first trip to Costa Rica for 4 night and 5 days. I will be traveling alone and wish to go somewhere with green nature. Not really looking for beach as I already have that at home.

My intention for this trip is to relax, breathe, write, yoga, meditation, hiking and repeat. I’ve looking into Monteverde or La fortuna. Any tips/ideas?

    TIA

      Hi Ana Maria!

Congrats on planning your first trip to Costa Rica! For nature, you’ve definitely picked two of the top destinations already: Monteverde and La Fortuna. Usually, I would recommend the Osa Peninsula too, but since your time here will be short, it likely doesn’t make sense for you to head down there since getting to/from the destination will eat up a lot of your vacation time. I’d stick to either Monteverde or La Fortuna, or both. If you need help deciding which place would be the better destination for you to visit, don’t miss our related blog post: How To Decide Between La Fortuna / Arenal Or Monteverde (Or Why You Should Visit Both)

      Pura vida! 😊
