KeymasterHi again Jill!
Sure thing! For drive times, please see our article here: Driving In Costa Rica: Distance And Duration Of Popular Routes (Ocotal isn’t included on the charts you’ll see in that article because it isn’t a popular destination, but it’s close to Playas del Coco, so you can use that instead.)
With respect to hot springs, these don’t exist in Monteverde because the Monteverde region doesn’t have volcanoes. So, if these are a must-have for you, La Fortuna would be the best place for you to visit! 🙂

What wonderful feedback! Thanks so much for reporting your experiences to us. We agree; Monteverde is wonderful! It’s such a special, unique part of Costa Rica.

KeymasterHi Ana Maria!
Congrats on planning your first trip to Costa Rica! For nature, you’ve definitely picked two of the top destinations already: Monteverde and La Fortuna. Usually, I would recommend the Osa Peninsula too, but since your time here will be short, it likely doesn’t make sense for you to head down there since getting to/from the destination will eat up a lot of your vacation time. I’d stick to either Monteverde or La Fortuna, or both. If you need help deciding which place would be the better destination for you to visit, don’t miss our related blog post: How To Decide Between La Fortuna / Arenal Or Monteverde (Or Why You Should Visit Both)

KeymasterHey Tara!
The tour operator has removed the mountain biking tour option from their list of available activities this year, so unfortunately the link I would normally send you is no longer active. 🙁 I’ll update the post above to address this change.

KeymasterHey Jacqueline!
The horseback option is a nice way to break up the trip. Personally, we prefer to take the van-boat-van direct, then go horseback riding in either Monteverde or La Fortuna, but the option to experience the horseback riding activity en route is a great way to travel efficiently if your time in La Fortuna and Monteverde will be tight. 😊

KeymasterHi Terri!
Several companies operate the van-boat-van trip across Arenal Lake. A few of the more popular companies to do so from La Fortuna are Desafio Adventure Company, Ride Costa Rica, and Aventuras Arenal.

KeymasterHello Tim!
We always recommend booking in advance (this goes for everything you plan to use for your trip—accommodations, tours/activities, and transportation services, including the van-boat-van service), even if you’re a group of only two people. When do you intend to visit? If you don’t want to book the service in advance, you should be able to obtain seats without an issue during the low season; availability is harder to come by during the high season.
Pura vida! 😊
