Yes, absolutely! It will require a fair bit of driving and you will want to fit in as much as possible in both locations to make the most of your visits while at each, but it is possible. If you plan to spend one night in the La Fortuna area, our best recommendation would be to depart from Playa Flamingo early in the morning and drive directly to La Fortuna. Once there, participate in the tours/activities that interest you, then spend the night at your desired La Fortuna hotel. The next morning, wake up very early and drive around Arenal Lake to Monteverde (no need to take the taxi-boat-taxi here as you will have the rental car). Plan to participate in the tours/activities that interest you in Monteverde, then depart later in the day for Playa Flamingo. 🙂

Absolutely! Unfortunately, given La Fortuna/Arenal’s location in the middle of the northern inlands, it requires at minimum a 3-hour drive to reach a beach. Most of the nicer beaches are anywhere from a 3.5-hour drive to a 6-hour drive away from La Fortuna. Thanks so much for reporting back! Yikes! Sounds like your experience was a lot different than ours. 🙁 That being said, we wrote the above post in 2011 so it is very possible that the bikes have significantly deteriorated in condition since then (especially if the same exact bikes are being rented out after all that time!). There are a number of places bikes can be rented from in La Fortuna (and in other popular towns throughout the country), so I suppose the best advice is for travellers to inspect any bike they opt to rent (regardless of where it is rented from) to best prepare for a safe, enjoyable, and problem-free ride! 🙂
