The revered Latin American female writer Isabel Allende once advised: “Write what should not be forgotten.” Inspired by the quote’s brevity and the subject matter of lasting significance, the articles in our Memorable Costa Rica series are concise and highlight what we feel are the most memorable aspects of featured Costa Rica experiences. If you don’t want to waste time rereading the repeated facts and long-drawn-out paraphrased summaries that some other Costa Rica resources offer, then the personal briefs in our Memorable Costa Rica series are perfect for you. Use them to discover the unique qualities and unforgettable moments that we believe each Costa Rica experience provides, so you can easily decide which experiences are worth incorporating into your trip, and in only five minutes or less. 👍🏽

Monteverde Orchid Garden brief

There are plenty of reasons to adore the decades-old Monteverde Orchid Garden, a not-to-miss attraction for any orchid aficionado, botanist, flower-lover, or general appreciator of nature. Most obvious is the garden’s collection of 450+ orchids, which showcases orchids of various species, colors, sizes, and shapes in a natural, outdoor setting. (Note that not all of the garden’s species are in bloom at the same time, but a whiteboard at the garden’s entrance announces the current bloom count so you know how many species you’ll see on the day of your visit. On any given day, there are at least 120 species in bloom.) Contrasting the large range of orchids is the garden’s small size, which is perfect for touring in a short amount of time and without much physical effort. (Give yourself one hour for the experience, and expect to walk only a few hundred meters along stone and concrete trails that are flat, albeit broken in places). In other words, the Monteverde Orchid Garden provides an opportunity to see a lot without doing a lot—a valuable find. Adding to the ease of the orchid garden experience is the Monteverde Orchid Garden‘s location. Situated in downtown Monteverde (known as Santa Elena), a popular destination in Costa Rica that’s likely already a part of your Costa Rica travel itinerary, and within walking distance of everything in the town’s core, the Monteverde Orchid Garden is an attraction that’s easy to access, and visits are simple to coordinate. (Simply purchase an entrance ticket to the garden and enjoy an informative, unhurried, guided garden tour.) Go to see the curated collection of beautiful orchids (our favorites are the miniature varieties that you’ll examine with a magnifying glass), to learn about the ingenious structure and behaviors of orchids, to immerse yourself in world-renowned biodiversity (the Monteverde area in particular is known for it), and to spend time exploring a quiet attraction that’s typically void of large travel groups.
