To answer your question about activities in La Fortuna/Arenal for seniors, fortunately the La Fortuna/Arenal region offers more things to do and see than any other in the country, so plenty of options are available.

Great question! My answer here would depend on their interests, abilities, and preferences.
From a tourism standpoint, both offer a lot to do and see. Many elderly travelers enjoy slower activities or activities that require minimal effort. Easy walking tours, bird-watching tours, and nature/exhibit tours are usually of interest, and these can be experienced at both destinations.
Boat tours (think slow-moving safari-type tours, not white-water rafting tours) are another popular favorite among elderly travelers. These do not exist in Monteverde but are available around La Fortuna.
Something else worth considering is the experience of getting to and from the area. While both destinations (La Fortuna and Monteverde) sit about the same distance away from San Jose and Liberia (give or take a half-hour), the road conditions into and out of La Fortuna make for a more comfortable drive. In addition, given Monteverde’s high elevation, the region tends to be colder, which may be an advantage or a disadvantage to the elderly, depending on whether they’d prefer to avoid Costa Rica’s heat and humidity, or else avoid feeling chilled.

Great question! Perhaps I will begin by asking this: do you plan to visit the La Fortuna (Arenal) region during your trip? If so, we would recommend touring the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. While we love the hanging bridges at the Sky Adventures Arenal, the hanging bridges at the Sky Adventures Monteverde Park, and the hanging bridges at the Selvatura Park (Monteverde), none are as accessible as the hanging bridges at the Mistico Park.
The Mistico Park has a variety of trails, including an accessible trail that’s better suited for the elderly and/or travelers with disabilities. (They also have a lovely garden you can stroll around.) Although the accessible trail skips more than half of the park’s bridges, it offers a shorter tour (in duration) and bypasses the highest part of the park (the accessible trail’s slope is less than half of the regular trail’s slope). As a side note, the Mistico Park offers flat trails without steps, non-slip material, and guardrails to hold on to along the way.
As for a guided tour, a private tour is always an option (albeit, a more expensive option). Alternatively, you can tour the bridges on your own and skip the guide altogether. If you think it would be beneficial to have a guide (you can evaluate this for yourself by reading our related blog post Costa Rica Guided Tours: Are They Necessary, Valuable, And/Or Worthwhile), you can ask the guide to stick to the accessible trail.
One last thought: make sure the elderly members of your family are comfortable with heights and swaying bridges. Many elderly travelers have a fear of heights and/or balance issues, and if this is the case for members of your family, skipping the hanging bridges altogether might be best.

Thanks so much for your inquiry! Unfortunately Monteverde is not a possible pick-up or drop-off location offered by the Pacuare River Rafting Tour (it is located too far away from the river and on a route that would require the tour bus to maneuver very bumpy road conditions). Currently, the available pick-up/drop-off locations for the Pacuare River Rafting Tour include San Jose, La Fortuna, Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Sarapiqui, Siquirres, Guapiles, and Turrialba.

Travel documents (such as passports) are precious, and travelers sometimes ask us whether it is better to carry the documents with them at all times or leave them in the hotel room. This is a tough call because risk is inherent anywhere and everywhere! We usually say to trust your gut. In most cases, we recommend leaving the original documents in your hotel room (many offer in-room safes) to avoid losing or causing damage to the documents while you participate in tours and activities. This being said, we highly recommend keeping a copy (or two!) of any/all important travel documents throughout your trip (you can even email copies to yourself, if you wish to have an electronic copy too), and ensuring those copies are kept in a different place than the originals at all times.
